Your image gets printed directly onto a sheet of 1/16" thick aluminum. The aluminum sheet is offset from the wall by a 3/4" thick wooden frame which is attached to the back. The University of Michigan's law quad entrances are decorated with many Corbels (similar to a gargoyle but don't channel water). Carved in the early 1900's they depict the people and activities in the early days of the university.
